Micro Focus had a free download of a very limited version of their net
express. Does it still exist? All I see is a patch for some bug, not the
full download of COBOL. I want to play with it in Vista before I commit to
moving my main development activity from my tried-and-true XP Pro. TIA,
Paul

Do you or any one else know what exactly I have to download (and where from)
for personal net express v5.1 to install. It says something about Visual
Studio 2008 needs to be present but the only things I find on the microsoft
site is specific languages is Basic, C/C++ etc.

I assume that the requested product is language neutral.

If you download any of the Express edition languages, you will get Visual
Studio 2008 Express edition also.

Why not get C# while you're getting COBOL...? :-)

Pete.

Only if .NET COBOL / Visual Studio Integration is selected among the
components to be installed. (It's selected by default.) If you don't
want .NET COBOL, you can unselect that feature.

If you do want .NET COBOL, install any of the free "Express" editions
of Visual Studio from Microsoft: C#, Visual Basic .NET, etc. For COBOL
purposes, it doesn't matter which you install.

Mmmmm, that's very interesting. I took "Visual Studio" literally and
assumed .NET COBOL would not co-exist/work with my Express edition.

Thanks, Michael, that solved my problem. But it asked for my name and
company - "Paul" and "personal use" - and a serial number and another number
that I don't have. Is that a problem?

No - don't worry about those fields. The installer collects that
information if it's available, so that users of the regular product
can find it for requesting license keys and making support requests.
With the Personal Edition you don't need to get a license key, and
there's no paid maintenance.

Even with the regular product installation you can leave those fields
blank; they're just for your later reference.
