Net Express 3.0 help

Hi COBOL people,

I'm in a COBOL class at school and we are using MF Net Express 3.0. I
bought the program off a buddy of mine who took the class last semester (The
orriginal, not some bootleg). Anyway, recently my registry got really
screwed up due to a virus that my little bro, bless his heart, downloaded.
I recoved to an earlier point and now the program won't work. Keeps telling
me "FATAL ERROR -- Cannot access message file" When ever I go to compile.
My teacher said it sounds like I'm missing specific registry entries. Well
I could reinstall and that should fix it, well turns out my roommate let one
of his buddies borrow my CD and also turns out that was a month ago, and no
one knows where it is. So What I'm getting at is, does anyone know which
registry entries would fix this, or does anyone have like a program update
that would fix it, anything. Or even if anyone has, or knows where to find,
the program downloadable online, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

the program
Presumably you mean the Cobol compiler?

You're stuffed, as far as I can see. Without knowing which version of which
compiler nobody can help you, and personally I don't think many of us get
into the details of the registry entries for specific compilers. The
registry is set up and maintained by the compiler itself.

If you had a registry editor and knew the publisher of the compiler, you
could go looking for that publisher's name and (after backing up the
registry) removing entries there. But you'd still have to do a re-install.

Over to anybody else, but I think you're going to have to recover that CD.
And let it be a lesson to you about "lending" software :-)

Micro Focus is the phrase you needed to say :-)

Having said that, I haven't used it in fifteen years, sorry!

Hmmm, don't think there's much you can do here Steve. It looks like you
recovered your registry to a point prior to the NX install. Even if you
could restore the NX entries manually, I doubt you'd get much further
because the license key check will kick in.

Since you have rights to an original copy of NX, you might try Micro Focus
support to see if they can relay a copy of the software and your license key
to you.

Steve,

I was surprised to see the references to the above sites - but kind of pricey if
you are just after a learning tool replacement. Check with your instructor - you
can probably get a version of Net Express University Edition Version 4.0 for
around $100 (US) - this includes quire a few nifty enhancements - Java access,
SQL etc.

But note it is *only* a learning tool. You can't distribute software you've
written for sale. (No details on this, but I'm told it has a built-in
restriction on file sizes to stop you being able to use it commercially). And
like the products mentioned above, the commercial version adds on a series of
zeroes to the price.. Chances are, should you subsequently wish to upgrade, you
*may* get a slightly reduced price on the commercial version if you have been an
'learner' on the University Edition.
